SML #004: The best social media platform
Aug 23, 2023Read time: 1 1/2 minutes
Many people ask us what is the best social media platform to start.
The problem with that question? It's the wrong question to begin with.
The first question should be: Where is the audience I want to reach?
Once you know where your intended audience is, you will know what platform to begin posting on.
Let's say you want to reach sophisticated business executives. The best platform to focus on will likely be LinkedIn or X (Twitter).
Or maybe you want to focus on a specific problem that Gen Z has, then you'd want to post on TikTok and Instagram.
Maybe you want to focus on building a community, then Facebook is a good place to start.
If you want to provide value with DIY information that goes in more depth, then you'd want to explore Youtube.
Eventually, you will want to learn how to use all of them and repost the same content on multiple platforms, to multiply your reach.
Now, having said that if you want to make minimal effort and hope to go viral, at the moment, Tiktok is the platform that gives you the best chance to explode with one video.
But don't confuse virality with business growth.
You may go viral because your video is funny, entertaining, and educational, and get no lead from it.
That is why it is critical that you first focus on the audience you want to reach, your ideal client, the so-called avatar.
Julio and I scuffed at the idea of creating an avatar for a few years until we started selling online courses.
We realized that no matter how many millions of followers you have if your message is not tailored and doesn't resonate with your intended audience, you will struggle to convert.
Remember algorithms are built to serve people. So focus on providing value for human beings.
ACTION STEPS:
This week focus on where your ideal client hangs out.
Think about what they like to do, what they like to read, and what problems they have that you can help them fix.
Think about their dreams and aspirations, their hopes and fears.
Then, create a post tailored to that ideal client and press publish.
